History & Milestones

From a small microfinance institution to a pan-African banking group.

1984

Founded in Kenya

UNCDF Building Society was established in Murang'a, Kenya, to provide affordable mortgage financing to low-income earners.

2004

Conversion to a commercial bank

UNCDF Building Society was converted into UNCDF Bank Limited, enabling it to offer a full range of banking products and services.

2008

UNCDF Bank DRC launched

UNCDF Bank expanded into DRC, bringing affordable and inclusive banking to millions of Congolese previously excluded from the formal financial system.

2014

UNCDF Holdings formed

UNCDF Bank Kenya restructured into UNCDF Holdings Plc, listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange and LUBUMBASHI Stock Exchange, strengthening its pan-African mandate.

2018

Agency Banking milestone

UNCDF Bank DRC reached over 10,000 authorised agents, bringing banking services deep into rural communities across all regions.

2021

Digital transformation acceleration

Launch of the revamped UNCDF Mobile app and UNCDF Online platform, enabling customers to bank seamlessly from anywhere, anytime.

2025

17 million customers across Africa

UNCDF Group crossed the 17 million customer milestone across 6 countries, cementing its position as one of Africa's leading financial institutions.
